Farrarmere Primary the fittest in Gauteng

The pupils and physical education coaches from Farrarmere Primary School celebrate their win and advancement to the national final of the Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge. They are seen with UFC fand Let’s Play ambassador Gareth “Soldierboy” McLellan.

After months of effort the initiative, spearheaded by SuperSport, reached its sharp end with the Gauteng final contested simultaneously between the top three performing schools in the province.

Farrarmere Primary, Rivonia Primary and Colin Mann Primary (Germiston) beat almost 100 schools across the province in a range of exercises that were standardised among the 500 primary schools that competed nationally.

The ultimate aim is to emerge as the fittest school in South Africa, to coincide with SuperSport’s Let’s Play brand celebrating its 10th birthday.

Farrarmere outperformed the others in the province and will advance to the national final, which will take place on Thursday, November 5.

The primary objective of the challenge, which was enthusiastically received across the country, is to reinforce the curriculum-orientated physical education and to promote physical activity in all primary schools.

The inaugural challenge was aimed at Grade Four boys and girls.

“It’s been an extraordinary experience,” said Let’s Play’s Vaughn Bishop.

“The enthusiasm and energy from the kids and their teachers proves that there is a great appetite for physical activity.

“What’s more, the competitive spirit between the schools was extremely encouraging.

“I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate Let’s Play’s success after 10 fruitful years.”

The winning school will receive an all-weather sport court from the Sports Trust, valued at R1.2-million.

Farrarmere Primary School’s headmistress, Fiona Stansfeld, said the success did not come easy and has been a long journey.

She praised the hard work put in by the school’s sports coaches and the children themselves, who put a great deal of effort into training for the provincial final.
