Korsman burns grass in controlled fire

Korsman Conservancy conducted a controlled ecological burn on Thursday morning (August 25) in the Westdene area.
Three areas were burned, from Divot to Short streets, opposite Sanctuary Lane and opposite Aubrey Ritz Park.
“I am glad to say that all three areas were burned,” said Korsman Conservancy chairperson Jane Trembath.
“We plan to burn a fourth area in September.
“The burn was successful, the fire brigade was professional and the fire was controlled as planned.”
The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) recommends that grass be burned for grass management.
“We burn grass every three years in rotation,” Trembath added.
“However, the fire must be controlled and we made sure that the fire department was on scene.”
The grass burning started at 8.30am and concluded at 11am.
“We had eight volunteers and three staff along with the fire brigade,” Trembath said.
“It is not unhealthy for the environment if the grass is burned about every three years.
“The grass needs to be burned so that the veld flowers can germinate.”
