Matthew walks away with eight distinctions

Matthew van Welie obtained eight distinctions in the 2016 Independent Examinations Board (IEB) exams.

Van Welie obtained distinctions in English, Afrikaans, mathematics, physical sciences, life sciences, accounting, life orientation, and advanced programme mathematics at the 2016 Independent Examinations Board (IEB) exams.

He said matric was definitely one of the toughest and most demanding years of school.

“I had many leadership roles, which demanded a lot of my time and effort, however I enjoyed being Head of House to the Grade Eights,” said van Welie.

The Lakefield resident enjoys playing piano and badminton whenever he’s not studying.

He said his family helped him a lot this past year.

“They were always there helping me find solutions to my problems and when I felt I like I was drowning in school work, they would show me that I was more than capable,” he said.

The 18-year-old hard worker will be studying medicine at the University of Witwatersrand.

“I was brought up watching my father, Michael van Welie, who is a dental surgeon, helping many people and I want to follow in his footsteps.

Lastly, he said he will do his best at university and hopefully that will be enough.
