According to the Benoni SAPS spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele, it is alleged that on March 2, the two constables stopped a man who was in a motor vehicle on Mercury Street because they suspected he was in possession of drugs.

“The man said the police asked him if he knows how much he would be expected to pay if he was arrested,” she said.

According to the statement, the policeman said he would pay R4 500 but offered to let him go for a bribe.

The man then asked the police to accompany him to an ATM where he withdrew R3 000.

The police and man then drove in separate vehicles from the ATM to meet at another location to exchange the money, but the police and the man were then stopped on the corner of Sixth Street and Second Avenue by the Crime Prevention Unit and CPF members.

“The man was still in the possession of the money and the policemen were arrested immediately,” Sekele said.

“They were transferred and detained at Brakpan Police Station.”
