13 neglected cats rescued from ‘shelter’ in Western Extension

SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore holds one of the seriously neglected cats.

The Benoni SPCA is conducting a criminal investigation and will lay charges against a man who was using a house in Howard Avenue as a cat shelter but neglected the animals.

“The house from which the 13 cats were removed was found to be in a horrendous state with faeces and urine all over the carpets, curtains and beds,” said SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore.

“The windows were meshed up so that the cats could not get out of the house.”

Finnemore described the smell in the house as nauseating.

According to Finnemore, the cats were taken in from all parts of Benoni.

“Most of the cats were diseased beyond treatment and one had to be euthanised on site as it lay dying in its bed,” Finnemore said.

One of the cats found on the premises is missing an eye.

“SPCA inspectors also found dead cats in the house, one of which appeared to have been deceased for several months.”

Finnemore said they have reason to believe that the man is hoarding cats elsewhere and that they too may be diseased and neglected.

“It is abhorrent that the owner had allowed the animals under his care to suffer so severely,” she said.

“We urge the public to research and even inspect rescue organisations, rehab centres, sanctuaries and shelters before donating funds to them.

“Not everything may be as it seems.”
