In an incident reported on a talk radio show on Tuesday (October 23), a Muslim learner at an Ashton International College was allegedly ordered to shave off his beard, despite the beard being part of his religious belief.
The City Times contacted the Benoni Ashton International College for further comment regarding the news report.
While the school did not disclose at which college the incident is alleged to have occurred, in a press statement the executive director of Ashton International College, Mark Brown, said:
“Ashton International College is a private independent Christian school.
“Any prospective parents are informed that we are a private independent Christian school.
“They accept, sign and agree to our school ethos and code of conduct voluntarily before their child is registered.
“While Christian, our school is multicultural in that students of all faiths are welcome and all our students adhere to the same uniform and code of conduct requirements.”
The media statement also reiterated the school’s mission statement which reads as follows:
“As a South African Christian educational institution we recognise our role to provide quality education to our students and to strive for excellence.”
