Three men, Sandile Dlamini (32), Siyabonga Malanga (26) and Mtjengiseni Maphumulo (35), were each sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for murder in the Benoni Regional Court on October 22.
On December 28, 2016, the trio assaulted Riaas Mathews near the Hillcrest plots in Putfontein.
Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Constable Justice Ramaube said Dlamini accused Mathews of housebreaking and theft. He then recruited Malanga and Maphumulo to help him look for the deceased.
“Dlamini then called deceased to meet up with him in Hillcrest, Putfontein,” said Ramaube.
“When the deceased got there the trio assaulted him and they left him for dead.”
Mathews was declared dead by the paramedics on scene.
Dlamini, Malanga and Maphumulo, were arrested on the same day.
Putfontein SAPS branch commander Capt Rajanderan Perumal Chetty and station commander Lt- Col Wellington Mathiane commended Detective-Sergeant Simon Mosako for a job well done with the investigation.
